What Is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain by definition is pain that lasts longer than six months or beyond the normal course of acute illness or injury. It’s an ongoing condition where pain signals remain active within the nervous system for months or even years. Chronic pain may originate with an initial trauma/injury or infection, or may stem from an underlying illness or disease. In some cases the cause of chronic pain is unknown as symptoms may range in severity from being mildly uncomfortable in intensity to a more excruciating, debilitating type of pain that can inhibit functionality in daily activities.

The overall prevalence of common, predominantly musculoskeletal pain conditions (e.g. arthritis, rheumatism, chronic back or neck problems, and frequent severe headaches) was estimated at 43% among adults in the US.
